Football may refer to one of a number of team sports which all involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score agoal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, more commonly known as just "football" or "soccer". Unqualified, the word football applies to whichever form of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word appears, including American Football, Australian Rules Football,Canasdian Football, Gealic Football, Rugby League, Rugby union and other related games. These variations are known as "codes".
Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. At the turn of the 21st century, the game was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport.
The game is played on a rectangular field of grass or green artificialturf, with a goalin the middle of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands or arms, while the field players typically use their feet kickthe ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extratime and/or a penaltyshootout, depending on the format of the competition.
The Laws of thegames were originally codified in England by theassociationin1863 and have evolved since then. Association football is governed internationally by FIFA, which organises the FIFA Cupevery four years.

The oldest football still in existence, which is thought to have been made circa 1540, was discovered in the roof of Stirling Castle, Scotland, in 1981.[1] The ball is made of leather (possibly from a deer) and a pig's bladder.[2] It has a diameter of between 14–16 cm (5.5–6.3 in), weighs 125 g (4.4 oz) and is currently on display at the Smith Art Gallery and Museum[3] in Stirling.
